Initial appointments for international staff are normally for one year which is also a probation period. Depending on the performance of the incumbent and the continuing need for the post, the contract may be extended.

The UN retirement age 60 years for international staff who entered the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund on or before 31 December 1989. It is 62 years of age for staff who entered the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund afterwards. The retirement age for area staff is 60 years of age.
