ALL OUR APPEALS

Voluntary contributions represent about 95 per cent of UNRWA’s income towards the General Fund and a 100 per cent of its income towards emergency appeals. The support UNRWA receives from its partners worldwide is therefore essential to the provision of education, medical care, food and other core relief services to the Palestine refugees it strives to assist and protect.

Understanding the Appeals System

UNRWA operates in a turbulent region buffeted by the Arab-Israeli conflict and its consequences in terms of episodes of violence and a worsening socio-economic situation. Emergency conditions, especially in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, have led the Agency to launch Emergency Appeals since 2000 to respond to the increasing needs of its beneficiaries. Furthermore, bouts of violence or targeted attacks, such as in Nahr el Bared camp in Lebanon in 2007 or the Gaza Strip in 2008, have required UNRWA to launch targeted Appeals to deal with the devastating consequences.

In its Appeals UNRWA calls on the international community for funding to cover emergency services not covered under the Regular Budget. The agency relies entirely on voluntary contributions to finance its operations, with donations made in cash, in kind or through the provision of services.

Financial Tracking Services

The Financial Tracking Service is a global, real-time database which records all reported international humanitarian aid. FTS is managed by the UN Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA). All FTS data are provided by donors or recipient organisations.

Gaza Crisis - Since the start of the intensive military operation in the Gaza Strip (Operation Cast Lead), UNRWA has continued to assist and protect Palestine refugees, including through delivery of food aid and provision of temporary shelter. With a ceasefire now in place, UNRWA is urgently seeking funds to meet the costs of restoring full service provision in Gaza as soon as possible and to address the immediate post conflict needs of affected families.

West Bank Emergency - Palestinians in the West Bank continue to be exposed to physical danger from military operations and a general lack of law and order. Furthermore, their livelihoods continue to be threatened as the economy has continued to perform badly with no improvement in key economic indicators. With rising unemployment, poverty, food insecurity and dispossession, Palestinians are facing a very uncertain future.

Nahr el-Bared Reconstruction - 27,000 Palestine refugees were displaced from NBC and its adjacent areas in northern Lebanon in mid-2007, as a result of the conflict between the Lebanese Armed Forces and the Fatah Al-Islam group. An estimated 95% of all buildings and infrastructure were destroyed. A major reconstruction and recovery effort to allow displaced refugees to return to their homes is now underway.
