DECLARATION OF THE CHAIRMAN OF THE MIXED COMMISSION AND SPECIAL REPRESENTATIVE OF THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE UNITED NATIONS, MR. AHMEDOU OULD-ABDALLAH

Yaounde, 29 August 2004

1. Pursuant to paragraph 4 of the Communiqué of the eleventh meeting of the Cameroon Nigeria Mixed Commission, the heads of delegations to the Commission, Senior Minister Amadou Ali of Cameroon and Prince Bola Ajibola (CFR) of Nigeria and myself met on 29 August 2004 in Yaoundé.

2. During this meeting, the heads of delegations noted with appreciation the progress achieved by the Commission in the implementation of its work progamme and in particular in the Lake Chad and Land boundary areas. They noted with satisfaction that peace and security prevail in those areas and that its observer personnel is monitoring the situation. They also discussed the modalities of the withdrawal and transfer of authority in the Bakassi peninsula.

3. With regards to the Bakassi Peninsula, the sovereignty of Cameroon over the peninsula was reaffirmed by the head of the Nigerian delegation.

4. Given constraints related to the calendar, other subjects of common interest, such as confidence building measures, the development of cross-border projects, and environmental and economic issues will be discussed at a later date.

5. To follow up on the issue of withdrawal and transfer of authority in the Bakassi Peninsula, the Chairman will convene another meeting before 15 September 2004.
