CNMC - The Civilian Observers - 2007 Planned Activities

In missions to the Lake Chad area, the land boundary and to the Bakassi Peninsula, the UN Observers, monitor the withdrawal and transfer of authority, the rights of the affected populations, and accompany the demarcation exercise.

In previous missions they have also highlighted a number of issues such as the resettlement of individuals, fishing practices, soil erosion, provision of basic infrastructures etc. In the upcoming confidence building activities, they will, through visits, follow up on the above mentioned issues and similar ones, as well as assess the requirements needed to address them.

In light of their TORs, missions will be organized to Lake Chad area (at least one) and to the Land Boundary (at least two, see below).  In addition, the visits to the Bakassi Peninsula (at least two) prior to the Follow-up Committee meetings are also expected.

The observers will be accompanying the demarcation efforts, visiting areas where border pillars are to be installed.  In this context, it is expected that two field visits to the Land Boundary will take place in 2007.  The length of these missions may vary from one to two months.
