MDGs*
- While there has been clear progress towards implementing the MDGs,
their overall success is still far from assured
- There has been significant progress towards the target of halving
poverty by 2015: the proportion of people worldwide living on less
than US $1 a day has dropped from 32% (1.25 billion) in 1990 to 19%
(980 million) in 2004.
- However, the lack any significant increase in ODA since 2004 makes
it impossible, even for well-governed countries, to meet the MDGs.
- In all regions, countries have failed to adequately address the
growing problem -and wasted economic potential- of unemployed youth.
The number of unemployed youth has grown from 74 million in 1996 to
86 million in 2006.
