Announcement of Core Initiatives for Google.org's Philanthropic Efforts

On 17 January 2008, Google.org, partner of the United Nations Office for Partnerships, announced its five core initiatives to combat climate change, poverty and emerging threats.
Google's founders have the commitment to devote approximately 1 percent of the company's equity plus 1 percent of annual profits to philanthropy, as well as employee time. This way, they are including more than $25 million in new grants and investments to initial partners for the new initiatives: ‘Predict and Prevent’, ‘Inform and Empower to Improve Public Services’, ‘Fuel the Growth of Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises’, ‘Develop Renewable Energy Cheaper Than Coal’, ‘Accelerate the Commercialization of Plug-In Vehicles’.

The United Nations Office for Partnerships has facilitated numerous partnerships between Google.org and the United Nations including with The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the World Health Organization (WHO), as well as the United Nations Foundation.
