Water is Life. Pass it on!

A truly global around-the-world run started on June 1st on the North Lawn of the United Nations Headquarters in New York to raise attention for over 1 billion people without access to safe drinking water. The Blue Planet Run kicked off events for the World Environment Day celebrated all over the world on June 5th to stimulate worldwide awareness of the environment and enhance political attention and action. On the occasion of the launch of the Blue Planet Run Mr. Amir Dossal, Executive Director of the United Nations Office for Partnerships announced that “the United Nations is pleased to be collaborating in support of this historic run to bring practical water and sanitation solutions to poor people who lack such basic services in the developing world”.

The first time ever around the world run is going to continue for 95 days until the 20 outstanding athletes will have crossed 16 countries and covered 15,200 miles. The runners, from 13 different countries, carry a small flask of fresh and safe drinking water (baton) in ten-mile shifts. The main objective of the run is to encourage people to open their eyes and support the over one billion people that lack daily, immediate access to safe drinking water at the 1400 events that are planned along the Blue Planet Run.

The initiative was presented by Jin Zidell, Founder and Chairman of the Blue Planet Run Foundation and included the support of the Actor and Academy Award winner Hilary Swank. It was made possible through the sponsorship of the Dow Chemical Company. Mr. Andrew Livers, CEO and Chairman of Dow affirmed his commitment and vision stating that “as a global company and a world leader in chemistry, we at Dow are uniquely positioned to help provide safe water to those in need - and sponsoring this first-ever Blue Planet Run is just one of the ways we are addressing some of the most pressing challenges faced by humankind”.
