Although Headquarters New York has
been served by a library since 1946, in 1961 the UNs library
moved into a new building constructed through the generosity of
the Ford Foundation and the persistence of former Secretary-General
Dag Hammarskjold. It is fitting that the building was dedicated
as the Dag Hammarskjold Library in his memory.
The Library has a very extensive collection
of UN documents and publications, a strong League of Nations collection
and a selective collection of specialized agency materials. The
focus of its non-UN collection is in the areas of the work programme
of the General Assembly and Security Council: disarmament, economic
and social affairs, humanitarian affairs, international law,
international relations, peace and security, peacekeeping, statistics,
etc.
