Update on Celebratory Events and Publications

Event

The Royal International Air Tattoo, the world’s largest military air show, will observe the 60th anniversary of the United Nations with the involvement of aircrafts and aircrews who have participated in United Nations peacekeeping and humanitarian aid missions. Among the countries supporting the tribute are the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Denmark and the Netherlands.
A UN exhibition will be mounted at the event by the UN Association in the United Kingdom.

Date: 16-17 July

Venue: Fairford, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom.

Event

Two meetings – a Media Forum and a gathering of Civil Society – will be convened by His Excellency Joaquim Chissano, former President of Mozambique, in his role as a Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the September Summit. The meeting will focus attention on the Secretary-General’s report “In Larger Freedom: Towards Development, Security and Human Rights for All”. The Media Forum will bring together a large number of South African journalists and media commentators to analyze the Report and to identify the specific role of the media in promoting its objectives. For the second meeting, President Chissano will meet with more than 500 representatives of civil society in South Africa for an exchange views and for their contribution to the debate on the Secretary-General’s report, and to the September 2005 Summit.

Venue: The Media Forum will be hosted by the South African Broadcasting Corporation.
The Civil Society Meeting will take place in the Pretoria City Hall

Event:

At a forum entitled “The Tsunami Disaster: Beyond Relief, Towards Development”, Shashi Tharoor, Under-Secretary-General for Communications and Public Information, will interview Ms. Kathleen Cravero, Assistant Secretary-General, UNDP Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery and Ms. Margareta Wahlström, Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator. The event is part of the Dag Hammarskjöld Library’s “Lectures and Conversations Series”. Sponsored by the Swedish Government, the Series is being organized in connection with the centenary celebration of the birth of former UN Secretary-General Dag Hammarskjöld.

Exhibitions

A historical photographic exhibition entitled “The Founding of the United Nations”, formally opened by the Secretary-General on 27 June in the Visitors Lobby of the UNHQ in New York, will continue until August. The retrospective exhibition features archival photographs from the UN Photo Library on the founding years of the United Nations and highlights of the Organization’s 60-year history. The exhibition is sponsored by the Hewlett-Packard Corporation.

An international exhibition of contemporary art devoted to the fundamental values of peace and development, formally opened on 27 June in the Palais des Nations in Geneva, will continue until October. More than 60 Permanent Missions have contributed a piece of original art representative of their countries and culture.

The article “UN Dreams of Rejuvenation” by Mr. Piotr Tsvetov appeared in the bimonthly magazine “The Russian Federation Today” #12/2005. The article is a product of the UNIC Moscow communication activities to promote the UN reform and the 60th anniversary of the Organization.
