The Book:
The 160-page book provides a global image of the building’s current functions and of its major importance from an architectural perspective, including as a main example of the International Style of architecture. The book contains 150 photographs, with 125 in colour by London-based photographer, Ben Murphy, whose work is in a number of international private collections and the National Portrait Gallery. The remaining twenty-five archival photographs are contributed by the United Nations Photo Unit in the Department of Public Information. The book’s introductory essay is geared towards the general public and provides the historical background to the selection of the Manhattan site, and highlights relevant architecture and design features of the UN complex. Detailed captions describe the photos from an architectural standpoint and summarize the functions of the areas portrayed (General Assembly, three Chambers, etc).
