ARRANGEMENTS FOR SECOND WORLD ASSEMBLY ON AGEING
The Second World Assembly on
Ageing will be held from 8 to 12 April 2002 at the Palacio Municipal de
Congresos in Madrid. The address is as follows:

The Palacio is approximately 25
minutes from the centre of Madrid on the metro (in non-peak hours) and five
minutes from the international airport of Barajas.
The building will be closed to the
public during this period and access will be restricted to those persons who
are accredited and wearing a United Nations World Assembly grounds pass.

Access
The entrance dedicated to the press
is located on Amberes Street located in the southern side (rear) of the
building.
During the World Assembly, access
for media will be restricted at certain times because of space or security
considerations. Media will be allowed free access to the Media Centre, the
commercial services to the press, the press document area, the press conference
room, the Media lounge, as well as the offices of UN and host country staff
servicing the press on the first and second floor of the East wing of the
building. All other areas are restricted. Coverage in restricted areas will be
arranged on a "pool" basis. Media will be escorted to restricted
areas by United Nations Media Liaison staff when needed.
Opening Day
For the opening day, access to the
Plenary Hall will be restricted due to special security measures and space
limitations. Tickets for seats in the press gallery will be issued to the media
representatives who wish to be present in the Plenary Hall. All visual media
coverage of the arrival of heads of State and Government and of the opening
ceremony of the Plenary will be done by selected media pools, and crews will be
escorted by United Nations Media Liaison staff.
Members of the pools should gather
at the Media Liaison office, on the first floor of the West wing of the Palacio
at 8:00 am to be escorted by a Media Liaison Officer to the VIP arrival area
and the Plenary Hall.

Media Centre
A Media Centre for the use of all journalists accredited to cover the
Assembly will be available on the ground floor of the Palacio de Congresos,
Auditorium A. Facilities available in the Media Centre will include electrical
outlets to enable journalists to use their laptop computers with modems, plus a
limited number of computer workstations with Internet access available on a
first-come, first-served basis and a broadcast village for radio and television
journalists.
The plenary sessions and other activities will be broadcast live into
the Media Centre and by closed-circuit television monitors located throughout
the Assembly site. Audio-visual and sound feeds of the plenary sessions, press
conferences and other events will be provided to broadcasters live on request,
free of charge. Plug-in recording facilities will be available.
A documents counter will provide journalists with all Assembly documents
as well as copies of daily press releases in English and French covering the
main activities of the Assembly. They will also be made available electronically
on the Assembly coverage Web site: www.un.org/ageing/coverage
Press conferences and media
interviews
Daily press briefings by the
Spokesman for the Assembly will be held at 12:30 pm in the press briefing room
located at the Media Centre. The list of press conferences will be announced
daily in the Media Centre and will be posted at www.un.org/ageing/coverage, the
Assembly coverage Web site.
This room will also be available for
press conferences by delegations and United Nations organizations. Requests for

interviews with Assembly officials and experts during the Conference. Please

need to be accompanied by a United Nations Liaison Officer.

Audio-visual Materials and Services
Requests for video and audio dubbing
of speeches in the plenary as well as press conferences can be purchased for a
fee through RTVE (Radio Television Espaņola). Requests should be addressed to

Videotapes are available in PAL
broadcast standard in BETACAM SP format. Speeches are normally available in the
original ("floor") language in which they were delivered. Special
requests for the recording of the interpreter's version in one of the six
official languages (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish)
should be made in advance, and are subject to the limitations of the recording
facilities.
Live television feeds are available
for patching into the pool feeds Radio/TV point in the Media Centre. These
services are free of charge on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Visual Coverage
in Plenary Hall
Governments Official photographers and official television crews will have an opportunity, on a rotating basis, to cover the speech of their head of State, head of Government or head of delegation, from
set positions in the Plenary Hall. Owing to space limitations, they may not
remain to cover other speeches. A limited number of still photographers,
escorted by United Nations liaison staff, will also be allowed to take
photographs from the Plenary Hall. These operations will be coordinated from
the Media Liaison Desk in the Media Centre, tel. +34 91 599 5659 or +34 91 599
5660.
Arrangements for
Coverage of Bilateral Meetings
Photo opportunities will be
available for bilateral meetings that are open for coverage. Media
representatives covering these meetings will be asked to assemble at the Media
Centre, from which point a United Nations liaison officer will escort them to
the location. A schedule of bilateral meetings will be issued daily.
United Nations
Meetings Coverage and Copies of Statements for the Press
The United Nations will provide
summaries of meetings in English and French of all open meetings of the
Conference. These may be obtained from the Information counter in the Media
Centre. The Spanish Government is providing coverage press releases in Spanish. Statements of heads of State, heads of Government or heads of
delegation will be available at the Information counter in the Media Centre if
delegates provide copies. There are commercial facilities for photocopying in
the Media Centre.
Internet
Internet users around the world will be able to follow the World
Assembly proceedings by viewing a live webcast and access information such as
the Conference press kit, press releases, daily highlights, official documents,
daily journal, statements and other information material, updated constantly,
