Addressing the United Nations Climate Conference (COP23) in Bonn, Germany, on Wednesday, Secretary-General António Guterres called for more ambition, more leadership and more partnerships to tackle climate change.
"Let’s put more effort into tackling disaster risk to create a safer, more sustainable world for all," he says.
"The United Nations will continue to help countries in the Caribbean to strengthen disaster preparedness, working closely with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency," he said.
Around 264 million children and adolescents are not in school and only 1 in 12 young people in low-income countries is on track to gain secondary level skills.
"Caring for, and using, our oceans in sustainable ways is critical to achieve ecological and economic goals for communities everywhere," he says.
"The decision by the United States to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change is a major disappointment for global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote global security."
The Secretary-General remains confident that cities, States and businesses within the US will continue to demonstrate vision and leadership by working for the low-carbon, resilient economic growth that will create quality jobs.

"You have added powerful momentum to the drive for the Agreement to enter into force this year,” the UN chief said in a ceremony in China.
The 3-day Forum aims to track progress and identify gaps and challenges to the means of implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), monitor the financing for development outcomes and promote the sharing of lessons from experiences at the national and regional levels.
The Secretary-General commends the announcement that China and the United States will sign the Paris Agreement at a special ceremony at the UN on 22 April.
