Policy makers seek to strengthen governance to aid African implementation of 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda

African leaders to discuss and debate the implementation of 2030 Agenda and Africa Union Agenda (Agenda 2063) in an integrated fashion

Recognizing the need to strengthen governance to achieve key sustainable development goals, African policy makers will meet in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 11-13 December to discuss ways to improve policies, governance, institutions and public administration that are critical for progress.

Many African countries are moving quickly to implement to implement the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and as the targets are being adapted to the national situation and incorporated in plans and policies, new institutions are being created, local governments and civil society are being engaged.

The symposium on “Governance for Implementing the Sustainable Development Commitments in Africa” aims to provide a common space for debate and learning on how to implement the 2030 Agenda and Agenda 2063 in an integrated fashion, along with other international agreements on sustainable development. The meeting will look at how to take “whole of government” and “whole of society” approaches to implementation in various country situations.

The Symposium aims to provide a platform for knowledge sharing among policy-makers to learn about how to localize the SDGs and elaborate, implement and review integrated policies and plans for implementing the SDGs as well as align resource allocation and budget with such policies. It also facilitates discussions on strategies to strengthen public institutions and equip civil servants to support the implementation of the SDGs, highlighting successful practices from around countries in Africa.

The meeting is being organized by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), UN Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), and the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) along with United Nations Development program (UNDP) are jointly organising this Symposium in cooperation with the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
