LEAVING THE UN

The United Nations offers support to staff members, as they either near retirement or are planning to leave the United Nations for other reasons. For those staff members at the end of their UN career, a comprehensive Retirement Workshop is offered twice annually that covers a range of issues, including human resource policy issues, social security, visa information, financial planning, and health and wellness. For information on the next workshop at HQ, or additional details, e-mail centrec@un.org.

For staff who are leaving for other reasons, and would like support through the transition, the Staff Counsellor’s Office has short-term counseling available to help sort out such professional and personal issues. Under circumstances where direct assistance cannot be provided, referrals will be made to appropriate sources. This service is available to all UN system staff and is carried out in strict confidentiality. For more information, contact Dawn Straiton, Staff Counsellor, straiton@un.org, (212) 963-7044

In order to pursue further career options strategically and creatively, whether in New York, another duty station, a peacekeeping mission, or a UN fund, programme, or agency, you will need time to conduct some research. The Career Resource Centre can support you in this capacity.
