Two weeks

The Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) and the American Society of International Law (ASIL) jointly sponsor a series of summer workshops on international organization studies held each year during the month of July. Five places in these workshops are customarily allotted to the United Nations Secretariat.

The purposes of the workshop are to:

  • Enhance professional development in international organization studies
  • Encourage new directions in international organization research
  • Establish and strengthen contacts among legal and international relations scholars and United Nations practitioners
  • Stimulate new teaching methods in international organization studies

The theme, schedule and venue of the workshop is announced around February every year.

Nominations of candidates are solicited by OHRM from all Departments and Offices. Each Department/ Office is asked to submit four nominations of staff members at the P-2 to P-4 levels with at least two years of service in the Organization. Nominees should ideally have doctoral degrees or be candidates for doctoral degrees in political science, law, international relations, human rights, economics, humanitarian or other related fields. However, staff who are not pursuing doctoral studies but who hold advanced university degrees in these fields may also be considered. The nomination of deserving young Professionals is encouraged as recognition of meritorious performance and demonstrated potential for professional growth. As participants are expected to present a research paper of publishable quality in the workshop, each nomination should be accompanied by a brief research proposal, a curriculum vitae, and two reference letters. Eight participants are selected by ACUNS from the applications received by OHRM.

Conditions of the Award

Selected candidates are placed on leave with full pay during the period of the workshop, and related expenses, including airfare, are covered by the Office of Human Resources Management and ACUNS.
