Cross-Cultural Communication: Communicating Within a Culturally Diverse Environment

Target audience

Objectives

Increase awareness of how cultural styles can affect communication and reflect on ways of reconciling and utilising differences to enhance communication and teamwork. Participants will be able to communicate more effectively by:

  • Understanding how expectations affect perceptions and behaviours
  • Enhancing understanding of the impact of culturally-based assumptions and norms
  • Exploring ways to adapt communication styles to be better understood by others
  • Identifying useful models and guides to increase opportunities for finding common ground

Topics covered

Cultural values and norms that affect openness to hearing, speaking and being influenced, including individualism/collectivism, self group orientations, power distance, rules and relationship, etc.

Objectives

Learn how to integrate global diversity effectively in team and organizational efforts is core to the success of the UN mission. Participants will leave this programme with:

  • A deeper understanding of the importance of the core value, Respect for Diversity
  • A global diversity self-assessment focusing on personal strengths and areas for growth and development
  • Knowledge of up-to-date research and best practices on global diversity
  • Greater ability to adapt to world view differences around culture, gender, race, rank and other important individual characteristics
  • A systemic approach to managing and reducing one’s own biases

Global Diversity for Leaders and Managers (New Programme)

Half day

Target Audience

Leaders and managers throughout the UN

Objectives

  • Critically evaluate and measure the UN on key diversity indicators and benchmarks using the Global Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarks tool.
  • Identify strategic opportunities for leaders and managers to proactively shape the UNs culture around Global Diversity
  • Examine and extend personal leadership skills around diversity using the Global Diversity Survey for leaders
  • Understand the role of newer aspects of diversity impacting the organization
    especially generational diversity
    as well as tips for leveraging such
    sources of diversity for greater organizational effectiveness

Mainstreaming the Gender Perspective

Team-based workshop, duration is determined in consultation with the Department or Office.

Target Audience

Staff at all levels within a department or Office

Objectives

  • Develop a plan to mainstream the gender perspective within the context of the department or Office
  • Develop a plan to integrate the gender perspective into specific areas of expertise
  • Understand the analysis involved in applying a gender perspective
  • Develop a strategy for raising awareness and sensitivity to gender issues of the department with a view towards creating a more inclusive work environment
  • Develop a departmental action plan

Topics covered

Review of the reasons why the Organization is mainstreaming a gender perspective; Review of current best practices and possible applications to improve the effectiveness of the work of the department; Initiatives that may be undertaken to mainstream a gender perspective.
