LDC Ministerial Conference, Cotonou, Benin
5-7 August 2002

The Government of Benin in its capacity as the Chairman of the Coordination Bureau of the LDCs, organized a Ministerial Conference of the Least Developed Countries in Cotonou from 5 to 7 August 2002.  The OHR provided substantive support to this Conference.  The Conference discussed on (i) progress made in the implementation of the Programme of Action from the perspective of LDCs, particularly actions by development partners in meeting their commitments (ii) issues of concern to LDCs in the follow-up of major global events, including Doha Ministerial Meeting of WTO and Monterrey Conference on Financing of Development (iii) treatment of LDCs issues and concerns in upcoming major events particularly World Summit on Sustainable Development and (iv) developments relating to follow-up arrangements of Brussels Programme of Action and efficiency of their functioning.  This LDCs Ministerial Conference was also supported by the Government of Denmark.  The Cotonou Declaration (English, French) adopted by the Ministerial Conference, inter-alia, welcomed the establishment of the Office of the High Representative and expressed appreciation to the Secretary-General for the appointment of the High Representative.
