Summary of the Briefing to UN Member States by the CTC Chairman on 21 January 2003
Ambassador Greenstock, Chairman of the Counter Terrorism Committee (CTC), briefed member states on the work of the CTC on 21 January 2003. The CTC had received 179 first round reports and 110 second round reports from member states to date. Of these 206 had been reviewed so far. 12 States had not yet submitted a report.
Angola and Mexico had joined the CTC Bureau as Vice-Chairs alongside Russia.
Ambassador Greenstock said that the Security Council Ministerial Meeting on 20 January on combating terrorism underlined the threat posed by terrorism. The Ministerial Declaration adopted by resolution 1456 (2003) demonstrated the consensus within the Security Council against terrorism and provided a timely impetus for the CTC to continue its efforts to ensure Member States implemented 1373.
The CTC had agreed a work programme for the sixth 90-day period (S/2003/72).
Ambassador Greenstock said information about the CTC's Special Meeting with international, regional and sub-regional organisations could be found on the CTC's website. Over 50 organisations had been invited. The Secretary-General would be joining the Introductory Session. The Meeting would be open to Member States to attend as observers.
