SENIOR LEVEL VACANCIES
The Secretary-General is pleased to announce the following job openings at the level of Under-Secretary-General:
Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States
The Under-Secretary-General and High Representative is accountable to the Secretary General. He/she is responsible for the overall direction, supervision and management of the Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States in the implementation of its mandates and approved programme of work. He/she engages in high-level consultations with Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, multilateral financial institutions and civil society groups, and assists the General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council in their reviews and assessments of progress achieved in the implementation of the above-mentioned programmes of action for the three groups of countries. He/she assists the Secretary-General in mobilizing international support and resources and undertakes appropriate advocacy work in favour of the least developed countries, landlocked developing countries and small island developing States, in partnership with the relevant entities in the United Nations system, as well as in the donor community, private sector, civil society, non governmental organizations, media, academia and foundations. He/she prepares or contributes to the preparation of the Secretary General’s Reports on the three groups of countries to the General Assembly and to the Social Economic Council.
The Secretary-General is seeking an individual with unimpeachable personal integrity and proven high level diplomatic and political advocacy experience. Strong communications skills are essential. Finally, familiarity with the structures and functioning of the political, legal and operational entities of the United Nations system will be highly desirable. Potential candidates should have some knowledge of the special needs of the three groups of countries and their priorities.

Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict
The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict will assess progress achieved, steps taken and difficulties encountered in strengthening the protection of children in situations of armed conflict. The Special Representative will raise awareness and promote the collection of information about the plight of children affected by armed conflict and encourage the development of networking. The Special Representative will work closely with the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Committee on the Rights of the Child, relevant other United Nations bodies, the specialized agencies and other competent bodies, as well as non-governmental organizations. The Special Representative will foster international cooperation to ensure respect for children's rights in these situations and contribute to the coordination of efforts by Governments, relevant United Nations bodies, notably the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, the United Nations Children's Fund, the specialized agencies and the Committee on the Rights of the Child, relevant special rapporteurs and working groups, as well as United Nations field operations, regional and subregional organizations, other competent bodies and non-governmental organizations.

Special Advisor on the Prevention of Genocide
The Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide will collect existing information, in particular from within the United Nations system, on massive and serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law of ethnic and racial origin that, if not prevented or halted, might lead to genocide. The Special Adviser will act as a mechanism of early warning to the Secretary-General and through him to the Security Council, by bringing to their attention situations that could potentially result in genocide. The Special Adviser will make recommendations to the Security Council, through the Secretary-General, on actions to prevent or halt genocide; and liaise with the United Nations system on activities for the prevention of genocide and work to enhance the United Nations’ capacity to analyze and manage information regarding genocide or related crimes.
