Secretary-General's video message for the World of Work Summit

Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General

Your Excellency, Ms. Mildred Oliphant, President of the 105th session of the International Labour Conference, ILO Director-General Guy Ryder, Distinguished delegates representing governments, employers and workers around the world, Ladies and gentlemen,

Thank you for joining forces at this World of Work Summit.
Two years ago, I had the honour of visiting ILO headquarters.
We had a fascinating discussion on youth employment.  The Governing Body Room was full of young people and ideas.
Following that event, Director-General Ryder and I resolved to mobilize the UN system around youth employment in a way that had never been done before.
Out of those efforts emerged the Global Initiative on Decent Jobs for Youth.
This was approved by the UN Chief Executives Board and launched in February of this year.
Young people are looking to us for a chance to make the most of their potential.  We have a shared responsibility to deliver.
I invite all governments, social partners, businesses, academic institutions, and youth organizations to support this vital effort.
I also salute the ILO for your End of Poverty Initiative.
Sustainable Development Goal 8 on Decent Work is crucial.  But you are also connecting the dots throughout the 17 Goals.
That vision of an integrated whole is central to success.  I commend the ILO for recognizing it so clearly.
Thank you once again for using your moral compass to point us to a future of social justice with decent work and dignity for all.
