Statement attributable to the Spokesman for the Secretary-General on the Democratic Republic of the Congo [scroll down for French version]

The Secretary-General is profoundly concerned by reports of increasing political tensions in the Democratic Republic of the Congo linked to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the country's electoral process. The Secretary-General calls for the strict respect of the fundamental freedoms and rights enshrined in the Constitution. He urges all parties to exercise restraint and express their views peacefully, including in the context of demonstrations scheduled to take place on 26 May.

He calls on all Congolese political stakeholders to place the interests of their country above their own by engaging constructively in a meaningful political dialogue aimed at peacefully resolving their differences.  He urges them to extend their full cooperation to the African Union Facilitator for the National Dialogue in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mr. Edem Kodjo, and reiterates the full support of the United Nations for his efforts.

Déclaration attribuable au Porte-parole du Secrétaire général sur la République démocratique du Congo

Le Secrétaire général est profondément préoccupé par les informations relatives aux tensions politiques grandissantes, liées à l'incertitude qui persiste autour du processus électoral en République démocratique du Congo. Le Secrétaire général appelle au strict respect des libertés et droits fondamentaux consacrés par la Constitution. Il exhorte toutes les parties à faire preuve de retenue et à exprimer leurs opinions pacifiquement, y compris dans le cadre des manifestations prévues ce 26 mai 2016.

Le Secrétaire général appelle tous les acteurs politiques congolais à placer les intérêts de leur pays au-dessus des leurs en s'engageant de manière constructive dans un dialogue politique visant à résoudre pacifiquement leurs divergences. Il les exhorte à coopérer pleinement avec le facilitateur du Dialogue National Inclusif de l'Union africaine, M. Edem Kodjo, et il réitère le plein appui de l'Organisation des Nations Unies à ses efforts.
