The Secretary-General takes note of the ruling released on 16 December by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague on the joined cases concerning territorial and related differences between the Governments of Costa Rica and Nicaragua. The hearings lasted several years, during which both Costa Rica and Nicaragua presented their arguments.

The Secretary-General welcomes the trust the Governments of Costa Rica and Nicaragua have placed in the International Court of Justice by asking it to resolve these differences.

He encourages the two Governments to abide by the ICJ's decision, as they have both publicly committed to do.
The Secretary-General expresses the hope that Nicaragua and Costa Rica will continue working to improve their relations as neighbouring countries with strong linkages among their citizens.

Declaración atribuíble al Portavoz del Secretario-General

El Secretario-General toma nota de la sentencia anunciada el 16 de diciembre por la Corte de Justicia Internacional en La Haya en el caso conjunto concerniente a las diferencias territoriales y otras relacionadas entre los gobiernos de Costa Rica y Nicaragua. Las audiencias duraron varios años, durante los cuales tanto Costa Rica como Nicaragua presentaron sus argumentos.
El Secretario-General da la bienvenida a la confianza que los gobiernos de Costa Rica y Nicaragua han otorgado a la Corte Internacional de Justicia pidiéndole resolver estas diferencias.
Anima a los dos gobiernos a acatar la decisión de la Corte, como los dos se han comprometido públicamente a hacer.
El Secretario-General expresa su esperanza de que Nicaragua y Costa Rica continuarán trabajando para mejorar sus relaciones como países vecinos con fuertes enlaces entre sus ciudadanos.
