Secretary-General's remarks at the UN Concert to Celebrate the Transformative Power of Music [As prepared for delivery]

Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General

I am pleased to join you for this concert to celebrate the transformative power of music.

Tonight’s concert will serve as a powerful reminder of the strength and beauty of music, and the unique role it has played throughout the history of humanity.

Over the next couple of hours this stage will be graced by 140 performers from five continents.  Their presence is especially welcome in this year when we are working towards a new sustainable development agenda and an agreement on climate change.

As we take in the sounds of the musicians, we will also be treated to an array of visual reminders that should inspire us all to take concrete steps as a community of nations to end poverty and protect our planet.

I thank you, Mr. President of the General Assembly, for your kind invitation to participate in this event.

Most of all, I thank the performers for this great gift in this great Hall.

Thank you.
