Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on the Presidential Election in Côte d'Ivoire [scroll down for French version]

The Secretary-General supports today's certification by his Special Representative of the result of the 28 November run-off presidential election in Cote d'Ivoire. He accepts his Special Representative's analysis and evaluation, taking into account all aspects of the outcome of these elections is in accordance with the announcement made by the President of the Independent Electoral Commission on 2 December. The Secretary-General commends the people of Côte d'Ivoire for their active participation in these historic presidential elections.

 

 

 

The Secretary-General congratulates Mr. Alassane Ouattara of the Rassemblement des Houphouëtistes pour la Démocratie et la Paix (RHDP) on his election and calls upon the President-elect to work towards lasting peace, stability and reconciliation in Cote d'Ivoire.

 

 

 

The Secretary-General also calls upon President Laurent Gbagbo to do his part for the good of the country and to cooperate in a smooth political transition in the country.

 

The Secretary-General wishes to emphasize that the will of the Ivorian people must be respected, and calls upon all Ivorians to accept the certified outcome and to work together in a spirit of peace and reconciliation for the stability and prosperity of their country. All persons must refrain from any violence or action that would cause any disruption in society. The Secretary- General warns those who may incite or perpetrate violence that they will be held accountable.

 

 

 

The Secretary-General assures the people of Côte d'Ivoire that the United Nations Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI), in cooperation with the international community, will undertake all possible actions, within its mandate to preserve peace and security in the country. He also wishes to emphasize that the United Nations remains deeply committed to supporting the successful conclusion of the Ivorian peace process in all its aspects, and looks forward to working closely with the President-elect and the future Government of Cote d'Ivoire to this end.

 

 

 

The Secretary-General commends the efforts of all those who have worked tirelessly in support of the political process in Côte d'Ivoire. The Secretary-General also commends the work of UNOCI and the UN Country Team, under the leadership of his Special Representative Mr. Y.J. Choi.

Déclaration attribuable au Porte-parole du Secrétaire général sur la Côte d'Ivoire

 

Le Secrétaire général soutient la certification du résultat du second tour de l'élection présidentielle du 28 novembre en Côte d'Ivoire, faite aujourd'hui par son Représentant spécial. Il accepte l'analyse et l'évaluation de son Représentant spécial, prenant en compte le fait que tous les aspects de l'issue de ces élections sont conformes à l'annonce faite par le Président de la Commission électorale indépendante, le 2 décembre. Le Secrétaire général félicite le peuple ivoirien pour sa participation active lors de ces élections présidentielles historiques.

 

Le Secrétaire général félicite M. Alassane Ouattara, du Rassemblement des Houphouëtistes pour la Démocratie et la Paix (RHDP) pour son élection et invite le président élu à ?uvrer pour une paix durable, la stabilité et la réconciliation en Côte d'Ivoire.

 

Le Secrétaire général invite également le Président Laurent Gbagbo à jouer son rôle pour le bien du pays et à coopérer en vue d'une transition politique sans heurts en Côte d'Ivoire.

 

Le Secrétaire général tient à souligner que la volonté du peuple ivoirien doit être respectée. Il appelle tous les Ivoiriens à accepter les résultats certifiés et à travailler ensemble dans un esprit de paix et de réconciliation pour la stabilité et la prospérité du pays. Chacun doit s'abstenir de tout acte de violence ou action qui pourrait entraîner des perturbations au sein de la société. Le Secrétaire général met en garde ceux qui commettraient ou inciteraient à commettre des actes de violence qu'ils seront tenus pour responsables.

 

Le Secrétaire général assure le peuple ivoirien que l'Opération des Nations Unies en Côte d'Ivoire (ONUCI), en coopération avec la communauté internationale, prendra toutes les mesures possibles dans le cadre de son mandat afin de préserver la paix et la sécurité dans le pays. Il tient également à souligner que l'Organisation des Nations Unies demeure fermement résolue à soutenir l'aboutissement du processus de paix ivoirien sous tous ses aspects, et se réjouit à cette fin de travailler étroitement avec le Président élu et le futur gouvernement de la Côte d'Ivoire.

 

Le Secrétaire général salue les efforts de tous ceux qui ont travaillé sans relâche en appui au processus politique en Côte d'Ivoire. Le Secrétaire général salue également le travail de l'ONUCI et de l'équipe-pays des Nations Unies, sous la direction de son Représentant spécial, M. Y.J. Choi.
