The presidential election scheduled to take place in Togo on 4 March offers a crucial opportunity for the country to continue to strengthen its democratic institutions, and foster national cohesion, stability and sustainable development.

The Secretary-General calls on all political leaders and institutions to ensure that the election is credible and peaceful and reflects the will of the people of Togo. He calls on all segments of society to refrain from any action likely to exacerbate tensions before, during or following the poll. The Secretary-General reiterates the continued commitment of the United Nations to support the electoral process in Togo.

Déclaration attribuable au porte-parole du Secrétaire général

sur l'élection présidentielle au Togo

L'élection présidentielle prévue le 4 mars prochain au Togo représente une occasion importante pour le pays de continuer à renforcer ses institutions démocratiques, et promouvoir la cohésion nationale, la stabilité et le développement durable.

Le Secrétaire général en appelle à tous les dirigeants politiques et aux institutions pour faire en sorte que cette élection soit crédible et pacifique et qu'elle reflète la volonté du peuple togolais. Il exhorte tous les segments de la société à éviter tout acte susceptible d'exacerber les tensions avant, pendant ou après le scrutin. Le Secrétaire général réitère l'engagement continu des Nations Unies à appuyer le processus électoral au Togo.
