New York, 12 January 2010 - Statement from the Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Alain Le Roy [scroll down for French version]
The Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations expresses his deep concern following this afternoon's catastrophic earthquake. The Department of Peacekeeping Operations is still in the process of gathering information on the extent of the damage and the status of UN personnel. Contacts with the UN on the ground have been severely hampered as communications networks in Haiti have been disabled by the earth quake. For the moment, a large number of personnel remain unaccounted for. The United Nations can confirm that the Headquarters of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) in Port au Prince has sustained serious damage along with other UN installations. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.

Le Secrétaire-Général Adjoint pour les Operations de Maintien de la Paix exprime sa profonde inquiétude suite au tremblement de terre catastrophique qui est survenu cet après midi en Haïti. Le Département des Operations de Maintien de la paix est en train de se renseigner sur l'ampleur des dégâts ainsi que la situation du personnel onusien. Le contact avec le terrain est particulièrement difficile du fait que les réseaux de communication en Haïti ont été coupés par le tremblement de terre. Pour l'instant, le sort d'un grand nombre de personnel reste à déterminer. Les Nations Unies confirment que le siège de la Mission de Stabilisation des Nations Unie en Haïti (MINUSTAH) a subi des dégâts considérables tout comme d'autres installations des Nations Unies.
