Dubai, 14 October 2012 - Secretary-General's message for ITU Telecom World 2012
ITU Telecom World once again brings into focus the importance of communications in meeting the global challenges of the day, from sustainable development and climate change to insecurity and intolerance.
Information and communication technologies are among the engines of economic growth and development, and can play a transformative role in improving people’s lives.
More than two billion people are connected to the Internet. With six billion mobile phone subscriptions worldwide, and the increasing availability of mobile broadband, we have an opportunity to use the reach of mobile connectivity to empower people with information and knowledge.
I am pleased that global thought leaders meeting at ITU Telecom World will seek to harness the power of smart technologies to find new approaches and solutions for a sustainable future, such as enabling a low-carbon economy, monitoring the earth, providing assistance in disaster relief, improving health care and advancing agricultural productivity.
ITU Telecom World also brings welcome attention to megatrends such as ageing populations, the emergence of new economic and industrial powers, and a plethora of new technologies that are dramatically changing the way we live, learn, entertain ourselves and do business.
I wish you every success at ITU Telecom World. Thank you for your commitment to building a more just, prosperous and peaceful world.
