New York, 4 October 2012 - Statement attributable to the Spokesperson for the Secretary-General on Mozambique [scroll down for Portuguese]
The Secretary-General warmly congratulates the Government and people of Mozambique, as they mark 20 years of peace today. He reiterates the United Nations' commitment to continue working with Mozambique as it consolidates democracy and strives to achieve social inclusion, women's empowerment and sustainable development. He recalls the role played by the now-concluded United Nations Operation in Mozambique (ONUMOZ), which helped to implement the 1992 General Peace Agreement and lay the foundation for a durable peace.
O Secretário-Geral felicita calorosamente o governo e o povo de Moçambique por ocasião da comemoração dos 20 anos de paz hoje. Ele reitera o compromisso das Nações Unidas de continuar a trabalhar com Moçambique no seu processo de consolidação da democracia e nos seus esforços para alcançar a inclusão social, o empoderamento da mulher e o desenvolvimento sustentável. Ele lembra o papel da agora concluida Operação das Nações Unidas em Moçambique – ONUMOZ, que ajudou a implementar o Acordo Geral de Paz de 1992 e a estabelecer as bases para uma paz sustentável.
