Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.H. Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Amir of Kuwait

The Secretary-General today met with H.H. Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Amir of the State of Kuwait.

Having just visited the UN House, the Secretary-General thanked the Amir and the government of Kuwait for its support for the work of the UN agencies working in Kuwait.

The Secretary-General expressed his deep appreciation and gratitude to the Amir for his personal and the country’s strong backing of the efforts of his Special Envoy, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, on the ongoing Yemen peace talks in Kuwait.

They also discussed the current political and humanitarian situation in Iraq. The Secretary-General commended the Amir for Kuwait consistent support for Iraq since 2014.

The Secretary-General congratulated Kuwait for having signed the Paris Climate Agreement and was very pleased to hear that the government would soon also ratify the treaty.

The Secretary-General also discussed the current situations in Syria, as well as in Israel and the State of Palestine with the Amir.

The Secretary-General had further separate meetings with His Highness Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, Prime Minister of the State of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Nasser Mohammed Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, former Prime Minister of the State of Kuwait and H.E. Sheikh Sabah Khalid Al Hamad Al-Sabah, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait
