Readout of the Secretary-General’s phone call with H.E. Mr. Petro Poroshenko, President of Ukraine

Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General

The Secretary-General spoke over the phone today with H.E. Mr. Petro Poroshenko, President of Ukraine. The call was initiated by President Poroshenko, who appealed to the Secretary-General on behalf of Ukrainian national Ms. Nadiya Savchenko, who has been convicted for 22 years in prison on 22 March by the Donetsk City Court in the Rostov-on-Don region of the Russian Federation.

The Secretary-General informed the President that he continued to closely follow Ms. Savchenko’s case, including reported breaches of due process and fair trial rights. He underscored his overall expectation that all UN Member States guarantee due process, fair trial rights and abide by internationally recognized standards for the administration of justice.
