Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Ibrahim Ahmad Abd al-Aziz Ghandour, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Sudan

The Secretary-General urged the Government of Sudan to take strong ownership of the Sustainable Development Goals and underscored the need for African countries to speak with one voice on climate change.

The Secretary General welcomed efforts to launch an inclusive National Dialogue and urged the Government of Sudan to create an environment conducive to its success. He underscored the need for the Government of Sudan to engage in direct talks on a cessation of hostilities with the armed movements in Darfur and the SPLM-North in Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile States so that they can participate in the National Dialogue.

The two also discussed relations between Sudan and the United Nations, noting the importance of enhanced cooperation and dialogue for the benefit of the people of Sudan. The Secretary-General looked forward to further discussions on the exit strategy for the African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), under the guidance of the UN Security Council and the AU Peace and Security Council.
