Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. François Louncény Fall, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guinea

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. François Louncény Fall, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guinea.

The Secretary-General commended the Minister for the signing by the government and the opposition of a political agreement to resolve contentious issues ahead of the elections. He stressed that the holding of inclusive, credible and peaceful presidential elections would be essential for the consolidation of democracy in Guinea.

The Secretary-General reiterated the United Nations commitment to support Guinea at this critical moment, including through the good offices of his Special Representative for West Africa, Mohamed Ibn Chambas. He commended Guinea’s progress in the fight against Ebola and reaffirmed the United Nations commitment to support the country in reaching zero Ebola cases. Furthermore, the Secretary-General stressed the importance to ensure national implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
