Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Prakash Man Singh, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Federal Affairs and Local Development of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Prakash Man Singh, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Federal Affairs and Local Development of the Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal.

The Secretary-General reiterated his condolences following the April and May 2015 earthquakes. They discussed Nepal’s efforts to rebuild the country as well as Nepal’s progress on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and the need to engage on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Secretary-General thanked the Deputy Prime Minister for Nepal’s important contribution to UN peacekeeping.

The Secretary-General commended the Government and Nepali people on the adoption of the new constitution. He strongly welcomed the decisions made by the Council of Ministers on 1 October to create the conditions for dialogue. He urged all parties to respond to the calls for dialogue and to resolve their differences in a peaceful and flexible manner. The Secretary-General also expressed concern about the obstruction of essential supplies on the Nepal-India border and the difficulties resulting from it.
