Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, H.E. Mr. Zhang Dejiang

The Secretary-General today met the Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of China, H.E. Mr. Zhang Dejiang.

The Secretary-General highlighted the priority areas of the United Nations this year, including reaching agreement on a meaningful and binding climate change and adopting a new sustainable development agenda. He appreciated China’s leadership and vision in South-South cooperation, including through regional economic and financial initiatives.

The Secretary-General also welcomed the upcoming summit jointly organized by China and the United Nations on the 20th anniversary of the Beijing declaration and Platform for Action.
The Secretary-General commended the constructive role played by China on the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
