Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Juan Carlos Varela, President of Panama

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Juan Carlos Varela, President of Panama. He congratulated President Varela on the hosting of the Seventh Summit of the Americas and said Panama's inclusive invitation to all Member States of the hemisphere made the occasion historic.

The Secretary-General and President Varela discussed key global issues such as the post-2015 development agenda, climate change and global efforts to counter terrorism and extremism.

The Secretary-General welcomed the progress made by Panama in a variety of areas, including in regard to poverty reduction, as well as the support provided by its Government to the UN system offices based in the country.
