Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. José Miguel Insulza, Secretary-General, and H.E. Mr. Luis Almagro, Secretary-General-elect of the Organization of American States

The Secretary-General met today in Panama City, ahead of the opening of the Seventh Summit of the Americas, with H.E. Mr. José Miguel Insulza, Secretary-General of the Organization of American States (OAS), and with H.E. Mr. Luis Almagro, Secretary-General-elect of the OAS.
 
They discussed the historic nature of the Summit, which for the first time gathers the 35 Member States of the Western Hemisphere. 

The Secretary-General commended Mr. Insulza’s leadership at the helm of the OAS during the past ten years. He also congratulated Mr. Almagro on his recent election and discussed priorities for the regional organization and its collaboration with the United Nations.

The Secretary-General, Mr Insulza and Mr. Almagro also exchanged views on many regional issues, including the future of the UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH), ahead of elections planned later this year in the country.
