Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, Secretary-General of NATO

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the Secretary-General of NATO. They exchanged views on Afghanistan and the outlook for the coming years. The Secretary-General highlighted both organizations’ shared commitment and support to Afghanistan’s stability, including through capacity building.

The two Secretaries-General exchanged views on the difficult situation in Ukraine and agreed that there could only be a political solution to the issue. They discussed the dangerous threat of ISIL in Iraq and Syria as well as the need for a strong and united stance by the international community in that context.

In addition, the two Secretaries-General had an exchange on the importance of resolving the Cyprus issue.

The Secretary-General took this opportunity to thank Mr. Rasmussen, as the outgoing NATO Secretary-General, and to wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
