Readout of the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip Erdogan,President of the Republic of Turkey

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Recep Tayyip  Erdogan, President of the Republic of Turkey. They discussed Turkey’s contribution to the United Nations, including the hosting of regional UN offices. 

The Secretary-General and the President focussed on the situation in Iraq and Syria, including international efforts to combat the threat posed by ISIL.  The Secretary-General thanked the President for his country’s generous support to the refugees who have fled the Syrian conflict, and encouraged Turkey to continue to welcome refugees from Syria, including those from the Kurdish community. 
The Secretary-General and the President discussed the status of the negotiations to achieve a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus, as well as Turkey’s role in supporting the process. They also discussed Ukraine, including the situation of the Tatar community in Crimea, and Gaza. Finally, the Secretary-General and the President discussed climate change and global efforts to combat the Ebola epidemic.
