Note to Correspondents -- Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs concludes visit to Ukraine

New York, 9 June 2014

Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman concluded a four-day visit to Ukraine today. He represented the Secretary-General at the inauguration of President Poroshenko on 7 June and conveyed to the President the Secretary-General's personal congratulations and commitment to being Ukraine's partner in these challenging times for his country.

In the spirit of the good offices of the Secretary-General, Under-Secretary-General Feltman had a series of bilateral meetings with senior officials and representatives of Ukraine's civil society to discuss opportunities for a political process to put Ukraine on a path of long term stability, prosperity and peace. He emphasised the importance of inclusive dialogue and reform to fulfil the hopes and expectations of all citizens of Ukraine. He also noted the responsibility of the international community to play a constructive role.

While in Kiev, Under-Secretary-General Feltman also met with Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) Secretary-General Lamberto Zannier and expressed the UN's dismay that the OSCE monitors had still not been released. It is unacceptable that staff of an international mission are being put in danger. Mr. Feltman reiterated the Secretary-General's earlier call for their immediate release and on all those with influence to help secure their freedom.
