Statement by the Personal Representative of the Secretary-General on the Border Controversy between Guyana and Venezuela (scroll down for Spanish version)

On 17 October 2013, the Personal Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General on the border controversy between Guyana and Venezuela, Mr. Norman Girvan, had very productive separate meetings with the Foreign Ministers of Guyana and Venezuela. The Ministers emphasized the excellent bilateral relations that currently exist between the two States.

In recalling the progress made under the Good Offices process in the recent past, the Ministers welcome the Personal Representative’s initiative to suggest a series of further steps to address the border controversy. These steps could include a schedule of meetings to move the process forward over the coming months.

The Personal Representative notes with appreciation the expression of confidence by both Ministers in the Good Offices process under the auspices of the United Nations Secretary-General. He looks forward to providing the Ministers with suggestions in the coming weeks, and discussing them with each of the Foreign Ministers in the near future.

PUERTO ESPAÑA, 21 de octubre de 2013 - El 17 de octubre de 2013, el Representante Personal del Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas sobre la controversia fronteriza entre Guyana y Venezuela, el señor Norman Girvan, sostuvo muy productivas reuniones por separado con los Ministros de Relaciones Exteriores de Guyana y Venezuela. Los Ministros destacaron las excelentes relaciones bilaterales que existen actualmente entre los dos Estados.

Al recordar los progresos realizados en el marco del proceso de Buenos Oficios en el pasado reciente, los Ministros acogieron positivamente la iniciativa del Representante Personal quien sugirió una serie de pasos adicionales para tratar la controversia fronteriza. Estas medidas podrían incluir un calendario de reuniones para avanzar el proceso en los próximos meses.

El Representante Personal tomó nota con apreciación de la expresión de confianza manifestada por ambos Ministros en el proceso de Buenos Oficios bajo los auspicios del Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas. El Representante Personal espera presentar sugerencias en las próximas semanas y discutir las mismas con cada uno de los Ministros de Relaciones Exteriores en un futuro próximo.
