Ban Ki-Moon, Former Secretary-General

The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, President of the Federal Republic of Somalia.

They discussed a wide range of issues including progress made by the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS) in launching a constitutional review process for the country.  They also stressed the importance of continued support to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and Somali forces, especially in light of the recent attack in Nairobi.

They discussed the commitment of the FGS to progress on national reconciliation and the necessary political outreach process between the FGS and the various regions.
The discussions also covered challenges in development of the security sector and rule of law in Somalia.  The Secretary-General also encouraged the President to continue to advance his Government’s commitment to promote human rights, including ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Secretary-General took the opportunity to reiterate the continued support of the United Nations to the Government and the people of Somalia. The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) will continue to support and reinforce Somali ownership of its peace-building and state-building agenda in line with the recently initiated New Deal framework for the country.
