Readout for the Secretary-General’s meeting with H.M. Queen Sofia of Spain

The Secretary-General met today with Her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain. During the meeting, they discussed the upcoming High-level meeting of the General Assembly on disability and development, scheduled on 23 September 2013, highlighting the importance of promoting and protecting the human rights of disabled people. The Secretary-General commended Queen Sofia on her steadfast support to water and sanitation issues worldwide and on advancing access to clean water as a human right. They also discussed the need to accelerate implementation of the Millennium Development Goals and the crafting of a post-2015 development agenda. The Secretary-General took this opportunity to inform Queen Sofia of the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria and of UN efforts to address this critical situation.
