Note to Correspondents on Earthquake in China

New York, 22 July 2013

At an event held at the Permanent Mission of the People's Republic of China to the United Nations on Monday, 22 July, 2013, the Secretary-General said in his remarks the following:

"Let me express my deepest condolences and sympathies to many people who have been killed and wounded by yesterday's earthquake in Gansu province [in China]. Our thoughts are with the families of victims and wounded people. I am sure that under the leadership of President Xi Jinping and help of people, there will be speedy recovery of those who are injured. I sincerely hope that the people of China will be able to overcome this very tragic [incident]".
