The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Mohamed Waheed, President of the Republic of Maldives.

They exchanged views on the Maldives’ political situation following the 7 February 2012 transfer of power and its efforts to strengthen democratic institutions of the country.

The Secretary-General strongly encouraged the Government and all concerned Maldivian parliamentarians to resolve the country’s political crisis through dialogue and consensus and reiterated that the UN will continue to provide the necessary political support.

They also discussed the challenges posed to the Maldives by Climate Change and efforts to meet these.
