Readout of the Secretary-General’s telephone conversation with H.E. Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic of Senegal, and Mr. Macky Sall

The Secretary-General spoke by telephone today with the two candidates in yesterday’s Presidential run-off elections in Senegal, Mr. Abdoulaye Wade, President of the Republic of Senegal, and Mr. Macky Sall. The Secretary-General congratulated the two candidates and the people of Senegal for the exemplary manner in which both rounds of the presidential elections were conducted throughout the country. He underlined the high sense of civic responsibility displayed by all political actors and civil society throughout the process, which he said was indicative of Senegal’s strong democratic commitment. He commended outgoing President Wade for his gracious and statesmanlike actions. The Secretary-General called on President Wade and Mr. Macky Sall to work together in the coming days in the interest of the country. Finally, the Secretary-General reaffirmed the support of the United Nations to Senegal in its peaceful development.Readouts on 26 March 2012
