Readout of the Secretary-General's meeting with Mr. Ahmet Üzümcü, Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons

New York, 29 February 2012

The Secretary-General met with Mr. Ahmet Üzümcü, Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) today.
 
The Secretary-General expressed appreciation for the continued efforts of the OPCW in working towards ensuring the complete and verifiable elimination of chemical weapons stockpiles and of chemical weapons production facilities.
 
The Director-General briefed the Secretary-General on the Organisation’s ongoing efforts to ensure the destruction of chemical weapons stockpiles in Libya.
 
Regarding Syria, the Secretary-General and the Director-General noted with concern the reports on the possible existence of chemical weapons in the country.
