Readout of the Secretary-General's meeting with H.E. Mr. Elbegdorj Tsakhia, President of Mongolia, on the margins of the 66th General Assembly

The Secretary-General met today, 19 September 2011, with H.E. Mr. Elbegdorj Tsakhia, President of Mongolia.

The Secretary-General warmly welcomed President Elbegdorj Tsakhia of

Mongolia and congratulated Mongolia for its fifty years of active membership in the United Nations. In particular, the Secretary-General expressed his appreciation of Mongolia's role in the areas of sustainable development, nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, and peacekeeping. The Secretary-General reiterated his support for Mongolia's efforts to consolidate its nuclear-weapon-free status.

The Secretary-General commended Mongolia's progress on its Millennium Development Goals. He discussed with the President UN-Mongolia cooperation on poverty reduction, climate change, challenges facing landlocked developing countries, as well as preparations for Rio+20 next year.
