Readout of Secretary-General's meeting with H.E. Abdullah Gül, President of Turkey
Istanbul, Turkey, 9 May 2011
The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Abdullah Gül, President of Turkey, on the margins of the Fourth United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries.
The Secretary-General and President Gül exchanged views on developments in the Middle East and North Africa, particularly the situation in Libya. The Secretary-General underscored the importance of coordinating efforts in this area.
They also discussed the Cyprus question and the Western Balkans.
The Secretary-General thanked the President for Turkey's active foreign policy initiatives in a broad range of areas, from helping the world's poorest countries to mediating in conflicts and fostering inter-cultural dialogue through the newly created Alliance of Civilizations Institute in Istanbul. He also thanked the President for hosting the LDC Conference.
