Readout of the Secretary-General's meetings with political leaders of Bosnia and Herzegovina

Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, 26 July 2012

The Secretary-General met yesterday with the Members of the Presidency, H.E. Bakir Izetbegovic, H.E. Mr. Zeljko Komsic and H.E. Mr. Nebojsa Radmanovic, H.E. Mr. Vjekoslav Bevanda, Chairman of the Council of Ministers; H.E. Mr. Zlatko Lagumdzija, Foreign Minister; and political leaders of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

During his meeting with the Members of the Presidency, the Secretary-General replied positively to their request for UN assistance in further advancing the ongoing process of reconciliation, reintegration and rebuilding of trust. These challenging tasks, which are crucial to securing lasting stability and prosperity for the country and the region, can only be accomplished by fostering dialogue and cooperation on the basis of mutual interest, understanding and respect.

In all meetings, the Secretary-General encouraged further reforms in the country and discussed developments in the Western Balkans, including regional cooperation and dialogue. They also discussed the benefits of accession to the European Union and how the United Nations could assist the countries of the region in meeting their EU aspirations.
