Secretary-General in answer to questions about Extraordinary Chambers in Cambodia

New York, 28 March 2005

Q: …You said you wanted to talk about raising more money. Is this enough?

SG: I think we can get it started. I was there when [inaudible.] We had a target of $43 million and we got about $38 million, which is pretty good.

Q: International?

SG: International. The Cambodians are contributing $11 million.

Legal Counsel: The Japanese (are contributing) $21 million - half of the UN share.

SG: So I think we had indicated we needed three years of pledges and one year's contributions paid up for us to start. And so I expect that some of the money will be released very early for us to have a year's contribution in cash and then begin the proceedings.

Q: Do you have a sense when this could get started?

Legal Counsel: We have to first of all to ratify the agreement and to set up the tribunal. We want to have very competent people there, and so that will take several months.
